Eventhough baby Haruka at 1-2 months old could not eat any solid food yet, she is so curious to watch daddy and mummy. And when we eat, I try to show her different expressions and voices to simulate her mind in guessing what we were doing. A few times when Tomomi was not looking, I let Haruka sipped some fruit juice and she liked the sweetness of it. Then, I kept making the expressions ... Mmmmm ... Oishi (Mmmm .... its delicious!) Then, I smacked my lips many times and try to sense if she wanted more. Gave her a little more and she liked it. And continued making more expressions with lots of lips smacking. After a few times (maybe 1-2 weeks), Haruka begin to make the same expressions and mimicked my lip smacking. Now, would Haruka have learnt doing this so fast, if not for the forbidden drink? :)
Tomomi complains to me always that we have to avoid too much sweet food in the future to avoid Haruka getting cavities and a bad teeth. Okay, but how much is too much? I thought it was fun to start Haruka early to explore taste. And more importantly, to start her communicating with me about what she wants. Looks like this simple exercise worked. There are plenty other baby expressions that a daddy can try with his baby. Some books say we ought to be speaking in full sentences to the baby as the baby can understand language even at a young age. I do not doubt that. But, its good to start communicating with the baby in simple sentences that he/she can pick up easily. Then, slowly move on to more difficult phrases. I think .... Mmmmm .... and lip smacking is the easiest universal expression that a daddy can start with. Food after all is one of the necessities in life.
