Tip 18: Pacify her or not?

A pacifier seems very common these days and I looked up its history again at wikipedia and found this item patented in USA as the baby comforter in 1900 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacifier This site is informative as it also shares issues surrounding the use of the pacifier and statements issued by various health foundations. From the start, Tomomi was adamant that we should not get Haruka any pacifiers or baby bottles. I now realized after reading wikipedia that pacifiers should only be introduced after breast feeding is established for around 6 weeks. But when Haruka was close to 3 months, I managed to negotiate with Tomomi to get her the pacifier and off and on, Haruka used it but it did not become an addicted comforting tool to the relief of Tomomi.

When I was in Malaysia, my mother who was a baby sitter introduced the pacifier to almost all the babies under her care. Also in Malaysia, the pacifier is a more accepted item being part of most babies' culture. I called my mother and she said children naturally ween out of pacifiers by 1 year old and it is not difficult either to make an effort to discourage the children from using them. So I was beginning to feel handicapped in our family if Tomomi insisted on not using the pacifier and I was worried that there will come a time when Haruka cried and we had no means to pacify the baby. So, I started some negotiations with Tomomi and finally got an allowance to buy the pacifier and promised to only introduce to Haruka after she is 3 months old and to only use it when necessary. But later, as Tomomi spends most of the time with Haruka, the pacifier is seldom used anyway and Haruka turned out to be quite happily independent of the pacifier. Only setback in not using the pacifier is that Haruka drooled more than if she would have used a pacifier maybe. So, this item is not so necessary after all except to keep your bed from having too many baby saliva drips. Surely, there are not so many necessities for a baby except for lots of love and communication.
